How to Southern Roll a Hat

The Panama hat is a classic piece of menswear, especially popular in the Southern regions to beat the heat from the sun without sacrificing your sense of style. The lightweight, flexible straw leaves used to weave Panama hats make traveling a breeze. Instead of taking up large amounts of space like other hats, or getting damaged from being squashed, you can employ the Southern roll. This method is a safe way to travel that won't cause any damage to the style and structure of your hat as long as it is done properly.

Instructions

Fold down the brim of the hat all the way around then hold the hat by the brim with one hand. Use your other hand to gently push out the indentations in the crown from the inside of the hat. Work your fingers along the indentations until it is popped all the way out.

    • 2

Hold the hat in front of you so the pushed out crease is parallel with your body. Pinch the hat along the crease and push the hat against yourself until it collapses flat. One half of the crown will curve inside the other half.

    • 3

Grip the left end of the hat, along the folded edge with the ribbon running horizontally. Gently roll the hat away from you horizontally until the hat is rolled into a cylinder.

    • 4

Slip a rubber band around the hat, over the ribbon to secure the roll in place. Slide the hat into a tube hat box for storage.
