How to Update a United States Passport

Passports are legal identification documents required by countries for international travel. The United States Department of State handles the Passport Agency and all passport requests made by American citizens. If you need to update or renew an expired passport, you can get the necessary forms at the Department of State's website, State.Travel.Gov. Keep in mind that the application process takes about four to six weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Have your passport photos taken before filling out any forms. Many local photo labs have cameras that conform to the Passport Agency's guidelines and regulations. Your face must be clearly visible, without hair or hats blocking the frontal view.

    • 2

Fill out a DS-82 form for a passport renewal application by mail. You can fill the form online and print it out, or print out a blank form and fill it out by hand with black ink. Print the form on standard 8 1/2 x 11 white office paper.

    • 3

Staple one photo to the application, using four vertical staples on each corner. Do not staple the second photo to your application.

    • 4

Sign and date your application form.

    • 5

Put your application, second photo, current passport and application fee into a padded, secure Tyvek envelope. If your name has changed since your last passport, include a copy of your marriage certificate or court order.

    • 6

Send your envelope using a traceable delivery method to prevent your essential documents from getting lost or stolen in the mail.
