How to: Passport to Iran

U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport, valid for six months beyond the stay, and visa to visit Iran. Additionally, there are special considerations for individuals with dual U.S. and Iranian citizenship. The Iranian government considers U.S. citizens who are also Iranian nationals solely Iranian citizens subject to Iranian laws. Although these individuals hold U.S. citizenship, they must enter and exit Iran on an Iranian passport.

Things You'll Need

  • Two copies of completed visa application forms
  • Passport valid for at least six months with a minimum of two blank pages
  • Two passport size photos. Females should observe the Islamic dress in the photographs
  • Details of travel arrangements, including a daily itinerary
  • Visa fees
  • Evidence of two-way airline tickets and of hotel reservations

Instructions

    • 1

      Contact an approved Iranian travel agent. Provide the agent name of applicant and surname of parent, nationality, sex, marital status, birth date, birth location, passport number, passport issue date, passport place and validity, date and point of arrival and departure, and occupation and place of work. The travel agent applies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the visa with this information. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorizes the request and assigns a visa authorization number to list on the visa application.

      Obtain a copy of the Iranian visa application from the Pakistani embassy, as Pakistan represents Iran's consular interests in the U.S.

      Complete the visa application form per the instructions included with the form.

      Request a Letter of Invitation from the travel agency that applied for visa authorization. Submit this with the visa application.

    • 5

      Submit the visa application and all supporting documentation to the Pakistani embassy. The application process may take up to three months.
