Complete the U.S. Department of State's "Nonimmigrant Visa Application," also called form DS-160, online at the Consular Electronic Application Center. (see Resources) After you fill out the form, print out the final page, which contains bar-coded information. Be sure to save a copy of the bar code for future reference.
You must pay a visa application fee at an HDFC bank approved by the U.S. State Department (see Resources). In 2010, the fee was $140 U.S. or 6720 pupees for a visitor visa. After you pay your visa application fee, you will receive a confirmation number. Keep the number.
Use your payment's confirmation number and the bar code information from your application to apply for an appointment at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. VFS Global, a private contractor, makes the appointments for U.S. consulates and embassies online (see Resources). When you've made your appointment, you will receive an appointment letter that you must bring with you to your appointment.
Bring a new passport-size photo for your visa to your appointment.
You will also need a valid passport when you arrive at your visa appointment. Be sure it is in good condition, as you may not be allowed to travel with your passport if it is damaged or overly worn.
