All applicants for a temporary visitor's visa must complete the online visa electronic application, DS-160. All applicants regardless of the country of origin must complete the online application and print the confirmation page containing the case bar code before appearing at the U.S. Consulate for the application interview. DS-160 is accessible through the US Department of State website: https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/.
Along with the DS-160 application receipt, applicants must present a valid original passport at the time of their application. The passport must be valid for six months after the applicant's intended departure date from the United States.
One color two-by-two inch passport-style photograph is required at the time of application. The photo must be set against a white to off-white background with the subject looking directly forward. The head from the chin to crown of head must take up at least one to 1 3/8 inches of the photograph. The face must be clear of any obstructions including sunglasses, scarves and hats. Only glasses worn for prescription reasons are allowed. Religious head scarves are permitted as long as the face is completely clear.
It is possible that an applicant is requested to present additional proof of self and situation during the visa interview. These requirements vary by country and even by consulate. Possible documents include: evidence concerning the nature of your trip such as hotel reservations or a letter from a host; proof of financial stability including banks statements, pay stubs or proof of support from a third party financial supporter; and proof of your intent to return. This includes proof of assets in your home country, family connections and employment.
