The Requirements for a Bulgarian Visa

When you travel to Bulgaria, for business or pleasure, you may or may not be required to obtain a visa in order to enter the country. Visas are issued by Bulgarian embassies and consulates abroad, and not at airports or land and sea passport control points across the country. If you are required to obtain a visa, have all of your required documents prepared, or you may have trouble entering the country.
  1. Foreign Visitors Not Needing a Visa

    • There are several countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria for up to 90 days every six months. Among these countries are the United States, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden and several others. People from these countries may enter with ordinary passports.

Processing Time, Motor Vehicle Entry and Police Registration

    • Once you arrive in Bulgaria, it may take up to 10 business days to process your visa, because the application needs to be approved by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry in Sofia. If you enter Bulgaria by car, you must present documents that prove you own the vehicle. Finally, all foreign visitors must contact the local police station within 48 hours of arrival to submit, in writing, the address where you will be staying. Hotels are required to register you at the local police station.

    Specific Requirements

    • In order to get a visa, you need a valid passport, a visa application, a passport-sized photo, and your return ticket or documents pertaining to your next destination. If you are visiting for business, you must have a letter from your company and a local Bulgarian business. Business visitors also need an endorsement by the Bulgaria Chamber of Commerce. Finally, private visitors need a letter of invitation from a Bulgarian citizen and the letter must be endorsed by local authorities.

    Sufficient Funds Requirements

    • In order to get your visa, you need to have your fee, payable in cash or postal order. As of January 2011, entry visas cost £ 46, long term visa D costs £ 76, while long term visa D1 costs £ 152. You must also have proof of sufficient spendable funds (at least $50 U.S. dollars a day), proof that you paid fair for your subsequent destination and an extra $200 for each motor vehicle entry.
