Instructions

    • 1

Keep your feet dry by purchasing a waterproof boot -- zero or below-zero temperatures tend to be accompanied by snowy or icy conditions. Look for shoe materials labeled waterproof, water-resistant or suitable for all-weather conditions. When purchasing a boot, you should also make sure that it is breathable so that any perspiration that builds on your feet will have room to evaporate.

    • 2

Purchase sock liners to wear under your socks. Sock liners fit tightly around your feet and deflect sweat from your foot to the outer sock, keeping your feet dry. Battery-powered heated sock liners also are available. These socks generate heat for below-zero temperatures.

    • 3

Wear socks made of wool or fleece instead of cotton. Wool and fleece are more insulating and don't hold moisture. Cotton socks will absorb and hold moisture -- they should always be avoided.

    • 4

Walk around to keep your blood circulating. If you are riding or sitting in winter weather, take occasional walking breaks so that your feet do not lose circulation. If you are a cyclist, Bicycle Apparel recommends wearing booties over your shoes to shield your feet from the wind.

    • 5

Insert heaters into your shoe or boot. You can buy heated insoles that range in size and shape. Do not get insoles that will cause your boot to fit too snugly because your feet will not be able to breathe and perspiration will be trapped.

    • 6

Let your boots dry completely before putting them on again -- this can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. If your boot is wet, there is a good chance that your feet will also get wet and cold.
