Energizer Battery Lantern Installation

Energizer lantern batteries look like giant rectangular cubes with a peg and a spring at the top. These batteries hold much more juice than ordinary smaller batteries, making them ideal for camping lanterns or industrial flashlights. To use lantern batteries, you need a lantern or flashlight with a very large battery cavity the same size and shape as the battery you want to use. Look for Energizer lanterns and flashlights to ensure your battery fits.
  1. Installing a New Battery

    • Open your lantern or flashlight’s battery cavity. Some just snap open on a hinge while others screw on. Depending on the size of the screws, you may need a glasses repair kit to obtain a screwdriver small enough to remove the cavity-lid screws.

Pull out the old battery and discard it in the trash. Energizer advertises Eveready lantern batteries as being environmentally safe because they don’t contain mercury.

Lantern batteries also don’t have polarized ends; both the positive and the negative terminals sit on the top of the battery with the spring being positive and the peg being negative. Make sure to look inside the battery cavity and turn your battery the right way before inserting it. Snap or screw the cavity lid back into place and flick your lantern or flashlight on and off a few times to make sure the battery is working. If not, try turning the battery. If it still doesn’t work, obtain a fresh battery.

    Screw Top Batteries

    • Some devices require screw-top lantern batteries. These batteries have two metal pegs covered with plastic caps rather than a peg and a spring. Always check the label on your device to see which kind of battery it needs. If you no longer have the label, check the battery cavity. Inside your device will be two indented metal plates instead of one indented plate and one raised plate. Each peg and plate should be marked with a plus or minus sign. You may need to hold the lantern or flashlight up to a strong light to see the signs.

Install a screw-top lantern battery by unscrewing both plastic caps and turning the battery so the plus peg comes in contact with the plus plate and the minus peg and plate do the same. Snap or screw the lid into place and turn the light on to make sure it works. If it doesn’t, try turning the battery, making sure the signs line up properly. If it still doesn’t work, you may need a fresh battery or light bulb.
