Measure the distance from the bottom of the seat of the Harley Road King to the tail pipes. This is the maximum measurement; the saddle bags you install can be no larger than this dimension. This is a safety precaution; if the bags are too large they might interfere with the back wheel or tailpipe and cause an accident.
Remove the seat from the Road King by loosening the screw at the back of the seat itself. Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the screw; put it in your pocket to make sure it does not disappear during the installation of the saddles bags. Remove the hand strap from the middle of the seat and pull the seat forward and upward to remove it from the frame of the motorcycle.
Adjust the saddle bags so that there are 2 inches of clearance between the bottom of the bags and the pipes. This will prevent the hot pipes from burning and damaging your soft leather saddle bags. Check the saddle bags to make sure that they are adjusted properly on the sides so they will not interfere with your shocks.
Lay the saddle bags over the seat area and check for a good fit. Make pencil marks on the yoke, which is the area of the saddle bags that sits under the seat, for the hardware that is being blocked and where the covered area of the yoke meets the main section. After marking, lay the saddle bags flt and reposition and align the marks for final installation.
Place the saddle bags on the motorcycle and clip them in using the included saddle bag clips. These will hold the bags in place. Place the seat back on by inserting the tongue in the front and sliding the seat back. Screw the retention screw back in on the back of the seat. Inspect the saddle bags to make sure that they are on tightly and that they are not in the way of any major parts such as the shocks or tailpipes.
