Why Pompeii Has No Evacuation Plan: An Ancient City Frozen in Time

Pompeii: An Archaeological Site, Not a Living City

Pompeii was a Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site, not an inhabited municipality. Therefore, it does not have—nor need—a modern evacuation plan.

Visitors should follow site safety guidelines, stay on marked paths, and heed any instructions from staff regarding weather or structural hazards.
