How to Find Michigan's Time Zone

Michigan is often called the "Mitten State" due to its mitten-like shape. Michigan is part of the American Midwest and is on Eastern Standard Time. Finding Michigan's time zone means using and finding the current Eastern Time (EST) and adjusting your time piece accordingly. A small sliver of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is on Central Standard Time. Michigan, like most of the United States, recognizes Daylight Savings Time each year.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your current local time (for example, if you are in California, you use Pacific Standard Time). If you do not have a time piece, look at a cell phone or go online to a time and date website to find the current local time.

    • 2

Adjust the current local time to Eastern Standard Time. If you need to find the time for the northwestern corner of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, adjust the time to Central Standard Time. Use Central Standard Time for the areas of the upper peninsula that border with neighboring Wisconsin.

    • 3

Make a note of the date. Adjust accordingly for Daylight Savings Time.

    • 4

Get the current UDT (Universal Daylight Time) and subtract four hours for the Eastern Standard Time for most of Michigan. Subtract five hours for the region of Michigan (UP) using Central Standard Time.
