Determine if your visa is eligible for renewal. Certain classes are eligible. Contact United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to see if your visa is eligible. If you cannot renew it, you will need to leave the United States and apply for a new visa from outside the country.
Ask United States Citizenship and Immigration Services if the renewal can take place from within the United States or if you must be in your country of origin and apply at a consulate or embassy.
Organize and gather the documents you'll need to renew an expired visa, including your passport with, at minimum, six months' validity, your expired visa stamp, a letter from your employer, school schedule if a student, visa renewal form, documents confirming your financial situation, Form I-94, Form I-797, Form DS-156, Form DS-157, an I-20 from your school, Form DS-1648 and fees for renewing a visa. Depending on your situation, the forms you need will vary. For example, if you're a student, you'll need Forms DS-156 and DS-157. The forms needed also vary by your type of visa; check with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Fill out the application for visa renewal and submit all the documents. If you're outside of the United States, submit these documents to the U.S. embassy or consulate in your area. If inside the United States, submit to the nearest United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office. Make copies of all documents.
Set up an interview to renew your visa. Bring copies of all the paperwork you submitted. At the interview, you'll be asked your plans while in the United States.
