How to Explore the Land and Travel With Children

Exploring interesting and even exotic locales can be an exciting way for children to learn more about a variety of subjects --- from different types of ecosystems to different cultures and traditions. Travel over land gives them a closer acquaintance with the people and locales than your children would gain hopping about by plane. Just as importantly, a trip across the countryside with your children can be a memory you can treasure for a lifetime.

Decide on a destination or multiple destinations. Conduct research into attractions and destinations that offer family activities, such as a tour of the massive Mammoth Cave in Kentucky or watching period-dressed reenactors at the battlefield at Gettysburg. Use travel guides, books on the area and online resources like Google maps to plan your trip.

Choose a mode of transportation. The travel method you select has a lot to do with how far you intend to travel in a given time frame. For instance, you may want to take a one-day drive to the coast to explore a national landmark or historical site, then collect seashells along the beach. This trip you might do in the family car. On the other hand, you may plan a two-week trip to include stops at several state and national parks on your way to see the Grand Canyon. In this instance, you might want to rent an RV to make the trip more comfortable.

Rent a car or recreational vehicle that fits your family's needs depending on your family's size and other factors such as your budget and the type of trip across land that you want to take. Familiarize yourself with the manual and any operational materials you receive when renting an RV to ensure that your family has a safe trip.

Plan ahead, especially if you are traveling across country. Reserve adjoining hotel rooms when possible or camping spots well in advance. Check to see if certain chains have discounts for families and if they allow the family pet. Whether you are going on a long-distance trip or just an afternoon outing, remember to pack games, snacks and any extra items that you think might come in handy. Don't forget any medications.
