Metalworking has been one of the main industries in Brisbane for hundreds of years. This mostly encompasses welding, working with construction metals and blacksmithing. Largely due to the influence of metalworking on the city, much of the Brisbane's art incorporates metal.
In 1999, the Brisbane City Council approved the creation of a number of scrap-copper kangaroos to be displayed throughout the city. The city said it was its most popular public art project to date.
Several local metal artisans in Brisbane want to pass along the craft, and they offer training classes so that anyone from a novice to a professional can learn how to create art from copper and other metals.
