The time of year you are visiting Alaska may determine what type of clothing you wish to pack. Pack warm clothes, such as long underwear or a fleece jacket, because even in the summer, temperatures only get into the high 50s and low 60s. If visiting in the winter months, pack a winter cap, gloves, scarf and heavy jacket.
If visiting in the summer, bring a couple shorts and T-shirts, which can be layered underneath warmer outer wear. This is just in case you find the temperatures warmer than expected.
When packing for your Alaskan vacation it may be necessary to pack a few different types of shoes. If planning on hiking through some rough terrain, it may be necessary to bring a pair of hiking boots to protect your feet. A decent pair of walking or running shoes may come in handy if planning on doing light hiking or shopping through the small towns.
If you are planning on enjoying a rafting tour, try to bring shoes that are waterproof, to keep feet warm when water comes in the boat. Rain gear may be another item to include with waterproof shoes.
Though the weather is not as warm as Florida or California, pack sunscreen because the sun bounces off the snow and ice just as it would the water and sand in warmer states. A hat with a brim or baseball-style cap and sunglasses also help protect you from the sun.
When traveling, going on tours or hiking, bring extra batteries and memory cards. It may be awhile before you are able to charge batteries or download photos from your memory cards. Having extra will ensure you have a ready camera when photo opportunities arise.
