At 65,000 acres, Allegany is the largest New York state park and is open year-round. Allegany State Park has several areas within its boundaries devoted to cold-weather activities. The Art Roscoe Ski Area lies in the Red House Area of the park and offers cross-country skiing. There are also almost 100 miles of groomed trails for snowmobiling. While there are plenty of campsites available, winter campers can also take advantage of one of the more than 150 winterized cabins.
The Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park sits on a hill in the central portion of New York. The park offer views of the south and west of southern Otsego County. Much of the 200-acre state park is comprised of forest land, with about one-third consisting of meadows and ponds. Winter should not deter campers, since the park has cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The winter activity trails connect to the greater New York trail system.
Fodor's has called Letchworth State Park the "Grand Canyon of the East." The Genesee River has a 17-mile gorge that results in three waterfalls, some as much as 600 feet high. Though the summer brings rafting and hot air ballooning, Letchworth State Park is a haven for winter camping attractions as well. Once the snow season comes, the park offers cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Lechtworth also has family-friendly winter activities, such as snow tubing, an on-site ice-skating rink and sleigh rides in horse-drawn carriages.
