Guadalupe River Tubing Rules

The Guadalupe River is one of the most popular tubing rivers in Texas. The rules below refer to the Lower Guadalupe, which is within New Braunfels city limits, but these rules change over the course of the river as it flows through multiple city limits. Although these rules differ slightly from the laws in Canyon Lake, the New Braunfels rules are in all cases more restrictive and are therefore a better guide.
  1. Flotation Devices

    • River vessels must be less than 18 feet in length and cannot be made out of foam.

    Jumping

    • Jumping from trees, cliffs, bridges and other structures is forbidden.

    Beverages

    • Alcohol is allowed on the river, but with restrictions. No glass containers, high volume drinking devices (e.g., beer bongs), or containers under 5 fluid ounces are allowed. Coolers must have a locking mechanism and a maximum volume of 16 quarts, with one cooler per person permitted.

    Noise

    • Noise-making devices like radios may not be audible beyond 50 feet.

    Safety

    • Tube rental companies monitor the river flow rate. When the flow rate reaches above 500 cubic feet per second (cfs), children under 8 must wear a life vest. All river riders must wear a life jacket when flow rate reaches above 750 cfs. Tubing is forbidden when river flows above 1000 cfs.

    State Law

    • Texas State Law applies to all parts of the river. Littering on the river is illegal just as it is everywhere in Texas.
