Look at the weather forecast to see what types of clothing you should wear. The area near the Old Hickory Lock and Dam has a temperate climate and several recreational activities are available throughout the year. Travel north on I-65 from Nashville to Madison exit. Travel east on TN 45 to get to the lake.
Decide which recreational activities you will participate in. There are camping, marina, picnic, trail and swimming areas. Use the lock to take your recreational boat from one part of the Cumberland River to another. Other common activities include fishing, hunting and water skiing. Old Hickory Lake provides 22,500 acres of water for recreational purposes. Fishing piers are available at Sanders Ferry, Shutes Branch, Rockland and Bledsoe Creek State Park. Consider camping near one of the fishing areas and travel paved paths to get to the fishing areas. Suspended cedar trees attract fish, such as bass and crappie. Locate one of the maps of the trails so you can find your way through the trails and return to your campsite when you are done. The 1.1-mile Old Hickory Lake Nature Trail has three loops. Horseback riding is available in the park, allowing you to ride along the trails.
Determine where you will stay if you're planning to spend two or more days at the lake. There are several parks, including group camp facilities devoted to providing camping experiences for children. Only camp in designated camping areas, such as Cages Bend and Cedar Creek Campgrounds. Do not engage in recreational activities, such as building a fire, playing music or fishing, until you have verified that you are allowed to engage in these activities in the particular area that you are in. RVs can come to some campgrounds.
Plan how you will get your meals. While hunting and fishing are popular activities at the lake, you won't go hungry if you fail to catch your dinner. There are several eateries and a grocery store nearby. Hunting and fishing must be performed in certain designated areas nearby the lake.
