Flight Luggage Requirements

When you are packing for a trip, it is a good idea to double-check how much luggage you can bring with you. Airlines vary in how many bags you can check, and some airlines may have additional fees for checking luggage.
  1. Luggage Size

    • If you are planning to check your luggage, make sure your bags do not exceed the dimensions set by the airline and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). For carry-on bags, the length, height and width must be between 45 and 51 inches total. Checked bags can be as large as 62 inches total

    Luggage Weight

    • Carry-on bags must be less than 40 pounds, while checked bags must be less than 50 pounds. You can be charged up to $150 for bags weighing up to 75 pounds and up to an additional $175 for bags weighing 100 pounds. To be safe, make sure to weigh your bags at home before you head to the airport.

    Carry-On Luggage Allowance

    • Most airlines will allow you to take one carry-on and one personal bag. The personal bag can be a backpack or briefcase, purse or laptop case.

    Checked Luggage Allowance

    • Depending on the airline, you can be charged for checking your luggage. In most cases, however, you can check a maximum of two bags; any additional bags will incur a hefty charge.

    International Travel

    • If you are traveling internationally, make sure to check with your airline's requirements regarding weight and dimensions restrictions; they could differ from rules for domestic travel.
