AirTran Luggage Requirements

AirTran Airways provides service to many domestic and international locations. Before traveling, it would be in your best interest to find out its latest luggage requirements. This will help you avoid any unnecessary fees or luggage delays. Certain guidelines must be met if you're traveling with a pet, carrying on luggage or checking bags.
  1. Checked Luggage

    • As of September 2010, customers traveling in coach will be charged $20 for their first checked luggage if their bag weighs less than 50 lbs and is 61 inches or smaller. Customers will be required to pay $25 for their second piece of luggage. Anything after the first two pieces of luggage will be charged an excessive luggage fee of $50 per bag. Overweight luggage that falls between 51 to 70 lbs will be charged an additional $49, and anything between 71 to 100 lbs will be charged an additional $79 per bag. Over-sized baggage that is 62 to 70 inches will be charged an additional $49. Anything between 71 to 80 inches will be charged $79.

    Carry-On Luggage

    • Guests traveling with AirTran are allowed to bring one carry-on item and one personal item. The carry-on item must be stored under the seat in front of the passenger or in an approved overhead bin. Personal items include briefcases, laptop computers, handbags, umbrellas and a walking stick. If travelers are using any type of assistance devices that can collapse small enough to fit into an overhead bin or underneath a seat it will not count towards their carry-on item. Examples of assistance devices include crutches, walkers and canes. Please note, carry-on bags can not exceed 24 inches in length, 18 inches in width and 13 inches in height for a total combined linear measurement of 55 inches. Personal items can not exceed 17 inches in length, 12 inches in width and 8.5 inches in height.

    Traveling With a Pet

    • AirTrans allows its customers to travel with a pet. These pets must be well mannered and be able to fit into an approved carrier under the seat. There isn't a weight restriction but the kennel is restricted to 8.5 inches high, 17 inches long and 12 inches wide. It must be leak proof and have ventilation on at least two sides. During the flight the pet must remain in the carrier under the seat. Please note, this carrier will count as one of your carry-on items. Reservations must be made in advance if you're traveling with your pet because there is a limit of six pets per flight, with the exception of service dogs. Service dogs are always welcome regardless of the number of animals on the flight. Contact AirTran Airways reservations desk at 1-800-247-8726 for additional information about traveling with your pet.
