Passengers may pack box cutters, ice axes, knives, meat cleavers, razors, scissors and swords in checked luggage. The TSA requires that sharp objects be sheathed or securely wrapped in checked luggage to prevent injury to inspectors and baggage handlers.
Baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, cricket bats, bows and arrows, pool cues, spear guns, martial arts equipment and lacrosse sticks must be checked. The TSA suggests all passengers check with the airline carrier to ask about size restrictions and get instructions for packaging large items.
The TSA suggests that passengers direct inquiries to the individual airline carrier regarding their policy on guns and ammunition. If the airline permits ammunition in checked luggage, it must be packed securely in fiber, wood or metal boxes. Guns, including flare guns, must be unloaded and packed in a locked hard-sided container and declared to the airline at check-in. Non-flammable liquid and aerosol is permitted in checked luggage.
According to the TSA, passengers traveling internationally may encounter additional restrictions and fees. Passengers should direct inquiries to a travel agent or authorities in the country they are visiting for guidance.
