How to Wire a 1989 S&S Camper

An S & S Camper is a type of recreational camper that slides into the back of a pickup truck. The 1989 S & S Camper has older outlets and fixtures that can short circuit or not fit newer appliances. Wiring the camper takes a lot of electrical knowledge. Knowing the way a residential home is wired will come in handy when wiring this type of camper. Instructions

    • 1

Install the pigtail that runs from the back of the truck to the converter. Ensure you have the correct pigtail for the brand and model of truck. Run the pigtail up through the bottom of the S & S Camper and wire it to the DC-to-AC converter.

    • 2

Connect the electrical wire to the opposite side of the converter and run that wire into the electrical panel. Mount the 40-amp breaker to the electrical panel and connect the wire running from the converter to the bottom of the breaker. Connect the ground wire to a screw on the side of electrical panel.

    • 3

Pull wire from the electrical panel to the light switch beside the door of the S & S Camper. Run another wire from the switch to the light fixture. Insert another wire from the bottom of the light switch and pull it to an outlet. Jump one wire from each outlet for any appliances you plan to install in the S & S Camper. Power for the refrigerator, stove, and furnace are required, plus any additional outlets to power such things as a microwave, television or radio.

    • 4

Insert the outlets and switches in the electrical boxes where the wire is hanging out. Strip the wires and insert the bare ends in the slots of the outlets and switches. Wire the light fixture so it's active and insert a light bulb. Cover each outlet and switch with a cover plate.

    • 5

Plug the pigtail in the back of the truck and turn on the breaker. Check the light and the outlets for power. Use a volt meter to check each outlet before plugging in any appliance. Install the appliances one at a time and check to ensure they are working properly.
