How to Check for Snowy Road Conditions

Snow-covered roads can cause difficult driving conditions, irritating traffic jams and can greatly increase the risk for accidents. It's best to avoid driving when it is snowing, or try to wait until snowplows have come through to clear the roads. However, there are times when people must drive in even the most snowy conditions. Checking various sources for weather and road conditions can save time, aggravation and may even save lives.

Keep an eye on local weather conditions. The most accurate way to determine the current local weather is to check yourself. Is the snow falling heavily outside? Are more clouds approaching or are the skies clearing?

    • 2

Watch the local news on television. Local news channels are often the best source for up to date coverage of current weather and road conditions. Also check the Weather Channel, available on most basic cable packages.

    • 3

Read the local newspaper. The newspaper may not have the most current forecast, but it will likely have relevant information on local road conditions. The paper may also include a map of road closures, if any.

    • 4

Listen to the radio before you leave and in your car. Some news stations update their forecasts every ten minutes during a snow storm. The radio is a good source for information on road conditions because radio broadcasts are the primary source motorists have about the weather.

    • 5

Check the internet. There are plenty of weather sites that display all sorts of information regarding current weather conditions, forecasts and road conditions. The sites may show radar graphics of how long a storm will last and what areas will be most heavily affected. Check your state's Department of Transportation website for current road closure information.

Call friends or relatives in the destination area. If you are planning to travel to a particular city, call someone in that area to find out more about the current road and weather conditions.
