Kansas State Trailer Tag Weight Laws

Before traveling through Kansas with a trailer, be sure you understand the Kansas State Department of Revenue's rules and regulations governing trailers. These rules and regulations are governed by the weight and use of the trailer. Weights vary according to use, so be sure to carefully review the information available from the State of Kansas' Department of Revenue.
  1. Trailer Rules and Regulations

    • The state of Kansas requires that all trailers be registered and titled. There are two exceptions to this rule, however, that vary depending on use and weight of trailer. The exceptions pertain to farm trailers and to those weighing 2,000 pounds or less.

    Exempt Farm Trailers

    • In the state of Kansas, farm trailers with a hauling weight of 6,000 pounds or more are not required to carry a title or registration. The hauling weight is the weight of the load itself, excluding the trailer weight.

    Exempt Trailers

    • Trailers with an operating weight of 2,000 pounds or fewer in the state of Kansas are not required to be titled and registered. Operating weight includes the weight of the load and the trailer combined.

Only a bill of sale is required for a trailer meeting this exemption.

    Overweight and Oversize Trailers

    • Overweight and oversize trailers may be granted a special permit by the Kansas Secretary of Transportation that includes an authorization number stating where and when the vehicle may move within the state.

The permit describes the vehicle and type of load, as well as the route traveled. It may be awarded for a single trip or an annual trip.

Farm-related vehicles and machinery are exempt from this requirement.
