Weight Distribution Instructions

Loading a trailer or anything that sits on a pivot point such as an axle requires proper distribution of the weight. Improper weight distribution creates a safety hazard. Travelling with a load that is unbalanced will put the vehicle in danger of flipping or dragging. The standard ratio for a single-axle trailer is 60 percent in front of the axle and 40 percent behind the axle. Dual-axle trailers follow similar practices. Always make sure the hitch on your vehicle is sufficient to handle the maximum weight of the trailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the heaviest items first, positioned over or adjacent to the axle but toward the front of the trailer. Evenly distribute the weight between the left and right sides of the vehicle.

    • 2

Load the lightest items in the very front of the trailer.

    • 3

Position the medium-weight items along the walls behind the axle and down the center of the trailer above the axle.

    • 4

Place tall items on their side for open-top trailers. Stand them up in the center of the trailer positioned so that they are parallel to the sides of the trailer. Tall items should be placed in front of the axle near the front of the trailer.

    • 5

Secure all items carefully with rope or ratchet straps. Place a tarp over the load, and tie the tarp to the sides of the trailer for an open-top trailer.
