In addition to a valid driver's license that has not expired, there are other California documents that you must carry while you drive:
- Proof of current vehicle registration must be presented (registration card or sticker).
- Proof of financial responsibility, such as auto insurance, must be provided (insurance card or policy number).
- A valid smog inspection certificate must be provided if your vehicle is registered in an area that has smog checks (a green and white sticker on your license plate).
-If your vehicle is registered out of state, or if you don't have a California driver's license, you may need to carry an international driving permit (IDP) with your home-country driver's license.
Additional Recommended Documents:
- Current vehicle title (only if you've recently purchased or transferred ownership of the vehicle).
- Vehicle maintenance and repair receipts (to show proof of maintenance).
- Medical information card with emergency contacts (in case of accidents or medical emergencies).
Note:
When interacting with law enforcement, you must produce any of the above documents upon request. Additionally, it is recommended to keep these documents in a safe and accessible place in your vehicle.
