Fishing is one of the biggest recreation activities in and around Juneau. Beginners and experienced fishermen travel to the city in pursuit of some of the best sport fishing in the world. Types of fish to be caught in the area include Chinook (king) salmon, coho salmon, steelhead trout and halibut. The peak fishing season is June through August. However, some species of fish can be caught as late as November. Fly fishing in the rivers and streams surrounding Juneau is also popular. Ice fishing is carried out on frozen lakes during the cold, dark winters by local fishermen and tourists. There are a number of fishing camps, lodges, boat charters and tours available in the Juneau area. One company worth checking out is Juneau Sportfishing & Sightseeing, which offers a wide range of fishing tours as well as sightseeing expeditions, including whale watching by boat and glacier viewing by helicopter.
