Juneau is the capital of Alaska. The city sits at the bottom of Mount Juneau and is located by the Taku River and a number of glaciers. A booming frontier town during the 19th century gold rush (Mount Juneau originally was called Gold Mountain), Juneau today is a government town that is filled with state and federal offices. The area surrounding Juneau attracts tourists and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, hunting and fishing in the Alaskan wilderness.       Fishing is one of the biggest recreation activities in and around Juneau. Beginners and experienced fishermen travel to the city in pursuit of some of the best sport fishing in the world. Types of fish to be caught in the area include Chinook (king) salmon, coho salmon, steelhead trout and halibut. The peak fishing season is June through August. However, some species of fish can be caught as late as November. Fly fishing in the rivers and streams surrounding Juneau is also popular. Ice fishing is carried out on frozen lakes during the cold, dark winters by local fishermen and tourists.
