The Must Do Things for a Day Stay in Cozumel

The Caribbean island of Cozumel, located offshore from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, offers plenty to do for visitors who stop by on a cruise or take the short boat ride from Playa del Carmen. There is so much to do, in fact, that if you only have a one day stay in Cozumel you'll have to choose your "must do" activities wisely or risk missing out on some of the best things the island has to offer.
  1. Shopping

    • Whether you arrive by cruise ship or take the 45-minute ferry trip from Playa del Carmen, one of the best things to do in Cozumel is to shop. For many, this is reason enough for a day trip to island. On any given day, tens of thousands of tourists pack the island's markets and shops seeking bargains. Vendors competing for attention will often offer deep discounts to get visitors' cash. There's plenty of shopping near the piers at Puerto Maya and from street vendors, but for the real action head downtown to the multi-level Punta Langosta mall. Shoppers should make sure they left room in their suitcases, because there's plenty of deals to be had on everything of jewelry to crafts and duty-free liquor to Mexican blankets. Savvy shoppers should negotiate for even better prices.

    Beaches and Watersports

    • People who arrive by cruise ship and want to jump right into what Cozumel has to offer may choose to make a stop at the Chankanaab Marine National Park, just south of the pier. Explore a replica of an ancient Mayan village, take a beginner's snorkeling class or swim with dolphins. Families will want to head a little farther south to Playa San Francisco for snorkeling with the kids. Those wishing for a more authentic and relaxed island experience, however, should visit Cozumel's largely undeveloped east coast. Sun worshipers and scuba divers who make the sometimes demanding (albeit short) trip will be rewarded with mostly vacant and pristine white sand beaches and some of the best diving on the planet. Try a shore dive from Playa Bonita or catch the rays at gorgeous Chen Rio Beach.

    Nightlife

    • There's plenty to do in Cozumel at night but only one thing visitors need to do--Carlos 'n Charlie's. In its new location near the Punta Langosta Pier, Carlos 'n Charlie's Restaurant and Bar offers not-so-authentic Mexican fare, cheap margaritas and cheerful service. As thousands upon thousands of tourists can testify, you may not remember everything you did there the next morning but you'll know you had a good time. Lucky cruise ship passengers will have an extra day at sea to nurse their hangovers.
