How to Collect Drinkable Water in the Jungle

One of the most challenging things about trekking through jungle is making sure there is an adequate supply of drinking water. Carrying water is not practical as it is heavy and river water can be polluted and filled with parasites. Due to the rainfall in jungle areas, there are several relatively easy ways to collect drinking water, as there are natural places where water deposits itself.

Search for large leaves. As the rainwater comes through the jungle canopy it pools in these oversized leaves. The water is fresh and clean, due to the levels of rainfall, so should not need to be treated. Drink straight from the leaf or pour the water into containers. Check for insects and frogs inside the leaf.

Locate a stream, collect water in tin cans and boil it on the stove to purify it. This will take some time as the water will need to cool. River water is less acceptable as this tends to be much dirtier.

Break some bamboo stalks, bend them and allow the water to flow out into containers, or suck directly from the bamboo. There is not a huge amount of water in the stalks, but will be enough to keep people hydrated.

Build a water still. Dig a hole with a shovel, place a water container in the center and fill out the edges with leaves. Put a plastic sheet over the hole, secure in place with large rocks and place a small rock in the center of the sheet to depress it. The water will condense on the underside of the sheet and drip into the container.
