How to Get Cheap Car Rental Rates

Whether you're a regular car renter or you just rent on occasion, you always want to get the best rate. Car rental companies are a business, so they're going to try and get as much money from you as they can. Just because they offer you a free upgrade or pressure you to buy their insurance doesn't mean you need to. You can often save money on rental cars by simply renting the smallest car and pass on any special offerings.

Instructions

Research rental companies online. You can compare the going rates of different companies online, and some companies offer online-only discounts.

Look at smaller and less luxurious cars. A good rule to go by when renting cars is this: the larger and more luxurious, the higher the rate. If you have a large family, then you can't avoid booking a large SUV, but if you're traveling by yourself or with another person, then choosing a small compact car can save you a considerable amount of money.

    • 3

Book on a weekly basis and book early. You'll get a much better deal by booking the car a week or two in advance and by booking the car for the entire week rather than just two or three days. If you do only need to rent a vehicle for a day or two, do so on the weekend, when rates are cheaper than during the week.

    • 4

Opt out of rental insurance. Rental companies will try and get you to pay for insurance too, but it's often unneeded. Rental companies require that your insurance covers the rental car in case of an accident, but if you own comprehensive auto insurance policy, then the car is covered. Some liability policies also cover rental cars. Also check with your credit card company, as some credit cards cover rental car damage.

    • 5

Join the company's membership program. If you're a regular car renter, consider joining a paid membership that rental companies offer. The memberships typically offer free rental days, air miles, free upgrades and other benefits. If you only occasionally rent cars, then the membership fee likely won't be worth it.

    • 6

Pass on any offered conveniences. Conveniences such as a child seat rental add to your rate. Avoid free upgrades to larger vehicles, too, because a larger vehicle means that you'll spend more in gas.

Look at rental companies based in cities. Airport car rentals typically have higher rates than those based in cities.
