A Century and a Half of Tourism at Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe's allure as a tourist destination stretches back to the mid-1800s. The earliest recorded visitors were wealthy residents of California and Nevada who traveled to the basin to revel in its stunning alpine scenery and abundant wildlife.

The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 revolutionized access, bringing a wave of new visitors. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the shoreline was dotted with luxury hotels and resorts—such as the Tahoe Tavern and the Glenbrook Inn—catering to a growing leisure class. Steamer services ferried guests around the lake, establishing a tourism economy that has flourished for over 150 years.
