Single Female Vacations

"You don't mind traveling all alone?"

"No I like it."

"Oh, I would hate it."

"I'm the independent type--always have been."

Katherine Hepburn portrays Jane Hudson, a single woman traveling alone in Venice trying to break out of her shell in the 1955 film "Summertime." The film dramatizes one of the challenges of solo travel: The exhilaration of exploring what you want mixed with loneliness when you long to share a meal or conversation. Traveling as part of a group with other single women assures you company, along with free time on your own if you choose. There are travel agencies that specialize in these trips.
  1. Adventurous Wench

    • Adventurous Wench organizes active trips for women. "I know it's not always easy for single women to travel on their own," says Deanna Keahey, founder. Her all-women travel group fosters relaxed friendship and connection, rather than competition. Adventurous Wench chooses ecologically and socially responsible travel and provides various options within its packages.

Most travelers are age 30 to 60 and are single. Many come on their own while some travel with a relative or friend. Trips in 2010 included sailing in the British Virgin Islands, a Costa Rican wildlife tour, and a trip to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego with a glacier trek. Other destinations included Sedona, Ireland, San Juan Islands, Belize, Napa Valley and the Greek Islands.

    Serendipity Travel

    • Serendipity Travel features a way of traveling for single women inspired by "The Flaneur" by Edmund White, according to company president and founder, Peggy R. Coonley. "A flaneur is a stroller, an aimless idler, someone who wanders through the city without purpose or destination," she says.

Women who participate in Serendipity Travel adventures are single, divorced, working, retired or widowed and enjoy traveling in a small group rather than alone. Some trips planned in 2011 include Yoga, Adventure and Pure Bliss in Dominica, The Gardens of England and the Chelsea Flower Show with Cotswolds, and Walking in Wyoming.

The company sponsors a community project called House of Hope in the Dominican Republic and travels regularly to that location.

    Sights and Soul Travel

    • Sights and Soul Travel specializes in luxury tours and vacations for single women with destinations in Europe, South and North America, and Africa. Small group tours focus on unique experiences, fine dining and boutique hotels. The company tours are set at a relaxed pace to savor the sights, sounds and beauty of each locale.

All-women touring is an economical choice, says the founder. "If you do not have a traveling companion, there is the issue of the expensive single supplement, sometimes as much as 50 or even 100 percent of the tour cost," says Owner Yolanta Burns.

A women-only tour ensures singles can share a room. As an example, trips in 2011 include South Africa: Cape Town and the African Safari; Spain: Barcelona, Madrid and Andalucia; and the Ultimate New York City.
