Winter Train Trips

Forget worrying about whether your carry-on bag is too big or whether you can fit all your bags in your car trunk. Put a twist on your winter vacation and hop on a train. Several privately owned railroads operate in the U.S. that take passengers on scenic tours and teach railroad history. Though winter is off-peak season, some railroads offer trips, particularly near the holiday season.
  1. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

    • The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad was started in the 1880s and became a passenger-train operation in the 1990s. The railroad operates year-round, taking passengers to the Nantahala Gorge and, during the summer, to the Tuckasegee River. From Nov. 5 to Dec. 24, the railroad offers a one-hour excursion each evening called the Polar Express. Guests are treated to storytelling, hot chocolate, caroling and a visit from Santa. As of September 2010, coach seating for the Polar Express was $39 for adults and $26 for kids ages 2-12. Children under 2 may ride for free if they sit on an adult's lap.
