The interior of Antarctica is much colder than the coast. The average temperature at the South Pole in July is -49°C (-57°F). The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -89.2°C (-128.6°F) on July 21, 1983, at the Soviet research station Vostok Station.
The extreme cold in Antarctica is caused by a number of factors, including the high altitude of the continent, the lack of sunlight in the winter, and the strong winds.
