How does the myth of Demeter and Persephone explain change seasons?

In Greek mythology, the change of seasons is explained through the story of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, and her daughter Persephone. The myth goes like this:

Persephone, the beautiful daughter of Demeter, was gathering flowers in a meadow one day when she was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. Demeter was devastated and grieved so deeply that the earth grew cold and barren. Plants stopped growing, crops withered, and the world was plunged into winter.

Zeus, the king of the gods, intervened to find a compromise that would appease both Demeter and Hades. He decreed that Persephone would spend part of the year with her mother on earth and part of the year with Hades in the underworld.

During the time when Persephone is with Demeter, the earth blooms and becomes lush with life, signaling the arrival of spring and summer. When Persephone returns to the underworld, Demeter's grief causes the plants to wither and die, marking the transition to fall and winter.
