How to Spell Loser in Japanese

Japanese writing uses traditional Chinese characters, known as "kanji", and two types of modified Chinese characters called "hiragana" and "katakana." More than 130 million people in Japan, Palau and expatriate communities around the world speak Japanese. "Loser" in English is a negative word that's often used as an insult, as in describing someone as "a real loser." Japanese has a word that's used in that same context, and is considered rude. The word also can refer to an unmarried woman over the age of 30.

Instructions

    • 1

Spell the word "loser" in English letters as "makeinu." The word translates literally as "a dog that gets the worst of it in a dog fight" but it's generally used in the same context as "loser." The "make" part of the word translates as "loss" while "inu" is the Japanese word for "dog."

Spell the word using Japanese characters. "Makeinu" is written in three parts, two for the "make" portion and one for "inu." Carefully copy down the characters or use a Japanese font on your computer if you have a good understanding of the Japanese language. See the "Resource" section below for a link to an image of the characters.

Pronounce the word in Japanese. The "make" portion of the word is pronounced "mock-a," consisting of the "mo" sound in the word "mom" and "ke", as in "kettle." The "inu" part of the word is pronounced "ee-noo," consisting of the "ee" sound in the word "beef" and "noo," as in "nude." All together, "makeinu" is pronounced "mock-a-ee-noo."
