How to Pray at a Japanese Zen Temple

If you've ever wanted to pray at a Japanese Zen Temple (and let's face it: who hasn't at some point in their life, right?), then you need to be aware of the proper steps involved in the procedure. Yes, there is a procedure. And if you can perform it without the help of your Japanese friend, you'll get a reaction out of them that you won't soon forget.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the shrine or a spot to pray in the temple. They are usually next to an offering box and a bell with a rope hanging from it.

    • 2

Ring the bell once or twice by pulling the rope side to side.

    • 3

Throw some yen into the offering box. Any amount is OK, but avoid giving anything that totals four or nine as they are unlucky numbers in Japanese culture.

    • 4

Clap your hands together twice in praying form.

    • 5

Place your palms together at chest-level and tilt your head down with your eyes closed.

    • 6

      Finally, pray.
