Haunted Hotels in Vancouver & Victoria, B.C.

British Columbia has a rich history, beginning with its Aboriginal people about 10,000 years ago and continuing to its diverse population today. Victoria and Vancouver are two of the province's largest cities. It's natural with such a long history and dense population that these two cities would have numerous properties that are considered by some to be haunted. Some of these properties are hotels that are still in operation today.
  1. Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

    • The Fairmont Hotel is a luxury hotel in Vancouver that was built in 1939. It's said to be haunted by a lady in red, possibly Jennie Pearl Cox. Cox died in a car accident just outside the hotel in 1944 while wearing a red dress. She is said to haunt the 14th floor. The elevator makes unscheduled stops on this floor, and she is seen gliding down the hallway. Those who have seen her say that she's not malevolent; she just ignores the living and continues to enjoy her stay. (references 1, 2, resources 1)

James Bay Inn Hotel and Suites

    • According to the James Bay Inn's website, the hotel is the third-oldest in Victoria. The James Bay Inn is said to be haunted by Emily Carr, a painter. During Carr's lifetime, the Inn was a home for the elderly and infirm, run by the Sisters of the Love of Jesus. She died at the home in a room near what is now the bar. Emily Carr's biography reports that employees have seen Carr and heard her rattling dishes.

    Hotel Rialto

    • The Hotel Rialto is a luxury boutique hotel in Victoria. Formerly known as the Hotel Douglas, the hotel is said to have once housed a morgue in the basement. There is one door down to the basement. According to the 13 Spookiest Haunted Hotels in Canada website, employees report hearing a knocking coming from the inside of the basement door. When they open the door, there's no one there.

    Empress Hotel

    • The Fairmont Empress Hotel is an opulent hotel in Victoria. It's been listed by Travel and Leisure magazine as one of the top hotels in Canada. There are several ghosts said to be haunting the property, according to a walking guide produced by the city of Victoria. The most famous ghost is the hotel's architect, Francis Mawson Rattenbury. He was murdered by his wife's lover in 1935. His ghost seems harmless enough, strolling through the hotel lobby with a cane, then vanishing.
