New Guinea: World's Second-Largest Island, Part of the Malay Archipelago

New Guinea is the second-largest island on Earth (after Greenland), spanning ~785,753 km². It belongs to the Malay Archipelago (also called the Indo-Australian Archipelago), where the largest island is Borneo (shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei). New Guinea is split between Papua New Guinea (east) and Indonesian Papua (west).
