How to Visit Trinidad

One of the islands that make up the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, Trinidad is by far the livelier of the two. Trinidad is where the calypso the steel pan drum originated, the sound that instantly evokes images of swaying palm trees and blue waves crashing onto a long stretch of beach.       Go to the beach. While Trinidad is not known for having the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, they tend to be a bit less crowded and have waves that surfers love. Try Maracas Bay, Manzanilla Bay or Balandra Bay, all noted for their large waves and big palm trees. If you prefer a more secluded beach, try Paria Bay or Blanchisseuse Bay.

      Check out the Asa Wright Nature Centre. You'll be surprised at the sheer variety of flowers, birds and animals found at this nature preserve tucked away in Trinidad's mountains. Bring a swimsuit and take a dip at the waterfall on the grounds. Accommodations are available if you wish to spend a couple of nights.

      Visit the Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary. Spend an afternoon watching the birds as they flit about the Caroni Swamp. A knowledgeable guide will take you through the swamp in a boat, pointing out the many different types of colorful and unusual birds that live there, such as the scarlet ibis.

      Visit the Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, one of the oldest in the Americas. Located in the foothills of Trinidad's mountains, the monastery is a peaceful and serene refuge. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and to stroll among the colorful flowers and plants.

      Take in the displays at the National Museum and Art Gallery, located in the capital city of Port of Spain. Items from throughout Trinidad's history are exhibited, from artifacts that belonged to the island's first inhabitants, the Arawak tribe, to paintings by contemporary artists. History buffs will learning about the island's past and will walk away with a better understanding of Trinidad and its people.

      Enjoy the nightlife. The capital city of Port of Spain is where you'll find Trinidad's hottest bars, like 62nd and 3rd, where you can stop in for a drink and dancing on the weekend, or Mas Camp Pub, where you can enjoy local entertainers while sipping your rum punch.
