How to Camp in Vieques, Puerto Rico

The island of Vieques is situated off the coast of Puerto Rico. It was a military base until 2003, when the military turned over the former bases to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has designated the former military parts of the island as a wildlife refuge.

The island has several beaches. Only one of them, Balneario Sombe (Sun Bay), has public facilities. "Balneario" are beaches with public facilities. Camping is permitted on the other beaches, but there are neither guards nor toilets.
