Germany Never Invaded Italy in WWI—They Were Allies

Germany did not invade Italy during World War I.

At war's outbreak (1914), Italy was bound to Germany and Austria-Hungary by the Triple Alliance (1882). However, Italy declared neutrality, arguing the alliance was defensive and Austria's aggression voided obligations.

In 1915, Italy secretly signed the Treaty of London with the Allies (Britain, France, Russia) and declared war on Austria-Hungary—then Germany—joining the Entente.

German and Italian forces fought on opposite sides (Alpine front, Isonzo battles). Germany invaded Italy only in World War II (1943, after Italy's armistice).
