What does Ireland have to do with the Union Jack?

Ireland is not represented on the Union Jack. The flag is called the Union Jack in reference to the union of the English and Scottish crowns, representing England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Wales is not directly represented though its inclusion is sometimes implied.
