Spanish Dialects Spoken in Honduras

The vast majority of Hondurans speak Honduran Spanish, a variety of Central American Spanish with distinct features:

• Voseo: Use of vos instead of tú for informal "you," with unique verb conjugations (vos tenés, vos venís).
• Seseo & Yeísmo: Standard Latin American pronunciation (no th sound for z/c; ll = y).
• Local Lexicon: Words like cipote (kid), pisto (money), chunche (thing), catracho (Honduran demonym).
• Phonetic Traits: Aspiration of final -s (loh doh for los dos); reduction of -ado to -ao (cansao).

Minority Languages

• Garífuna: Arawakan language of the Afro-Indigenous Garífuna communities on the north coast.
• Miskito, Pech, Tawahka, Lenca: Indigenous languages, some endangered.
• English / Creole: Spoken in the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) due to British colonial history.

Honduran Spanish is mutually intelligible with other Latin American varieties; its slang and voseo are the main markers.
