Why is Baja California called Lower California?

The name "Lower California" is a result of the Spanish exploration of the region that the area was discovered by Spanish explorers who travelled north along the coast of South America and named the peninsula Alta California (Upper California). They named it "Lower California" because it was lower in elevation than Alta California.
