How did New Haven Connecticut get its name?

The name "New Haven" comes from the English explorer John DeForest. In 1638, he and a group of settlers founded a colony on the shores of Long Island Sound and named the settlement New Haven after his hometown in England. The name "New Haven" was chosen to reflect the settlers' hope that the colony would become a new haven for religious and political freedom.
