Children's Activities in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania

Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, is in the heart of coal country at the headwaters of the Schuylkill River. At one time more than 1,000 miles of railroad tracks wound through the county. Today, visitors will find reminders of the county's past in places such as the Number 9 Mine and Museum and W.K. & S. Railroad. The county is also home to three state parks and seven campgrounds with the Appalachian Trail passing through the area. If you're visiting the county with children, there's no shortage of activities to enjoy as a family.
  1. Heisler's Cloverleaf Dairy

    • Spend the day at Heisler's Cloverleaf Dairy. Open daily from April until mid-October, the dairy is home to Kiddie Land arcade, which includes video games, air hockey and skee ball. The property has 100 pairs of purple martin birds living in special houses, so encourage the kids to be on the lookout when visiting. Two 18-hole minigolf courses are available along with a driving range. When the kids get hungry, try one of more than 30 flavors of ice cream including teaberry, peanut butter cup, cotton candy, bubble gum and strawberry cream cheese. Hot foods such as burgers, chicken and french fries are also served.

    Whitewater Rafting Adventures

    • Take the kids for a trip down the Lehigh River offered by Whitewater Rafting Adventures. A family float trip can accommodate children as young as 4 years. The trip begins at the historical train station in Jim Thorpe and ends in Bowmanstown, lasting for seven miles. Kids should have a blast shooting through mild rapids with names like Great Gorge and Bear Trap. There are also opportunities to swim. Boxed lunches are available at the company's Red Rock Café. Reservations are recommended.

    Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train

    • Spark your children's imaginations by taking them on a train ride and tour of a coal mine at the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train. The mine tour takes you 1,800 feet into the side of Mahanoy Mountain as you ride in open mine cars. For 35 minutes, your tour guide will explain how coal mines work. Be sure to bring jackets, as the average temperature in the mine is only 52 degrees. The steam train takes visitors on a three-quarter mile ride around the mountain that lasts for 30 minutes. On the tour, the process of strip mining is explained.
