How to Go Sightseeing in Malibu

Say the name "Malibu" and most people can give you an accurate description of the city, even if they've never been there. Featured in many movies and TV shows, the celebrity enclave of Malibu prides itself on beaches, mountains, hiking trails, fine restaurants, and, of course, its celebrity residents.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit Leo Carrillo State Beach. You can walk your dog, take a dip in the ocean, sunbathe or get treats at the snack bar. Watch marine animals and explore caves by the mountains. Choose from a number of walking trails and enjoy the serenity of Malibu.

    • 2

Find the legal walkways through the "Malibu Colony." This private neighborhood features multi-million dollar celebrity homes owned by Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Cher, Goldie Hawn, Robert Redford and others. Try driving by the homes for a good view. Although you can find legal access on foot, it's rather limited and it's a highly secured area.

    • 3

Enjoy the Malibu Lagoon State Beach. It includes a bird sanctuary where hundreds of species stop during migrations. A keen spot for scuba diving, you can see lots of marine life among the reefs and kelp beds.

    • 4

Hike in Solstice Canyon. This rugged nature area has a thirty-foot waterfall, many lovely streams and creeks and even a statue hidden in a secluded area. The Solstice Canyon Loop, a three mile round trip hike detailed on LocalHikes.com, captures Malibu's natural wonders. You'll even see the ruins of a home nicknamed Tropical Terrace.

    • 5

Dine at one of Malibu's fine restaurants. Gladstones, located by the beach on Pacific Coast Highway, serves seafood outdoors at a patio overlooking the ocean. Dukes, also on PCH, serves seafood, burgers and offers Sunday brunch and a "barefoot bar" with mixed drinks, beer and specialty beach drinks like the "Tropical Itch" and "Lava Flow."
