August Events in Northern New York

Away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, Upstate or northern New York is a peaceful retreat for not only New York City residents but many visitors from around the country. With festivals, concerts and other events found throughout this region, upstate New York is anything but dull during the month of August.
  1. Bluestock

    • This isn't the return of the major hippie event of the sixties; no, that's "Woodstock," which was also located in upstate New York. This blues music festival is a new event that will be held at the end of August at the Hunter Mountain Ski Center in Hunter Mountain, the same place Mountain Jam Music Festival is held. Groove to the music of blues legends Buddy Guy and Elvin Bishop. Other blues artists at the 2011 inaugural event include Tommy Castro, Tab Benoit, Ronnie Baker Brooks and many others. Take part in the gourmet food offerings, the late night Blues Club available in the ski lodge and the canopy zipline ride available.

    Owasaco Airfield Days

    • Held annually, the Owasaco Airfield Days Festival doubles as a fun event for the community as well as a fundraiser for the Long Hill Fire Department. The event is held in mid-August and invites a variety of aircraft to the show. There is a barbecue provided by the Long Hill Fire Department during Airfield Days. There is a spot landing challenge as well as a Young Eagles Rally. For $10 a night, guests are invited to camp at the airfield.

    Alive at Five

    • Held from the beginning of June into early August, Alive at Five is a summer-long event in downtown Albany. Listen to all varieties of live music with everything from nationally recognized to local talent. Beer, fresh lemonade, cotton candy and barbecue are all available from local vendors. Bring your dancing shoes or simply "people watch." The concerts are held at the Albany Riverfront Park at the Corning Preserve.

    Phelps Sauerkraut Festival

    • Phelps, New York hosts the annual Phelps Sauerkraut Festival at the beginning of August. This has been an annual event since 1967 and features activities such as a parade, a 20k race, lots of food (including lots of sauerkraut), a crowned prince and princess, live music by Derek Joseph, rides, fireworks and of course a kraut eating contest. The festival is supported by Silver Floss Sauerkraut Company and Birds Eye Foods and celebrates Phelps, New York as the largest producer of sauerkraut in the world.
