Why is Pithole Pa. a ghost town?

Pithole was not a ghost town but rather an oil boomtown that existed from 1864 until the early 1880s. At the height of the oil boom, Pithole had a population of over 20,000 people, making it the second largest city in Pennsylvania behind Philadelphia. However, the oil boom quickly ended in 1872, and Pithole's population rapidly declined. By 1880, the town was almost completely abandoned.
